Background Information
Since 1997, Golfers Against Cancer, through annual golf tournaments and dinner auctions, has raised over $15 million to fund cancer research with the intent of finding a cure for this terrible disease.
Upon losing several close friends to cancer, an entrepreneurial group of Houston golfers chartered a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1997, and named it Golfers Against Cancer (GAC). Thanks to a strong inaugural year in which the Houston group raised over $80,000, word quickly spread of their success and the group has expanded ever since. Over the years, friends of the organization across the country have founded GAC chapters in their hometowns. GAC now has chapters in Atlanta, Boston, Greensboro, and New York.
Locally, the Annual Triad Dinner for Cancer Research (a Golfers Against Cancer event) was organized in 2005 by several golfing buddies... including Dr. Bruce Lyon, Bob Plybon, Mike Bruce, Butch Mills, Ross Cox, Jay Kirkpatrick, Tam Milton, John Moll, Gordon Cole, and the late Dr. David Olin.
The Triad Chapter of GAC is a unique fund-raising organization with an all-volunteer board that donates nearly 100% of its proceeds exclusively to cancer research. On a September Sunday evening every year, the Triad GAC hosts The Annual Triad Dinner for Cancer Research -- a dinner and auction fundraiser. Sponsors participate in a golf pro-am outing on the following morning.
The First Annual Triad Dinner for Cancer Research was held in September of 2005 and raised $260,000 that went to fund cancer research in North Carolina. Since its founding, the Triad Chapter of GAC has raised more than $1,500,000 to help speed the cure for cancer. These funds have been awarded to the major comprehensive cancer centers at Duke University, UNC-CH, and Wake Forest University, and to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
