- Expression Profiling Provides a Novel approach to Target Therapeutics in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Gene
  This study is designed to develop optimal treatments for specific patients with colorectal cancer, combining chemotherapy and targeted agents based on genomic signatures.

Tannishtha Reya, Associate Professor - $20,000
- Regulation of Chronic Myelogeneous Leukemia by Hedgehog Signaling.
  To study the regulation of chronic myelogenous leukemia by Hedgehog signaling, integrating molecular cellular, and organismal approaches and using mouse models and human xenografts.

UNC (Chapel Hill) Research Projects

Howard McLeoad, Pharm.D. & Richard Goldberg, M.D. - $56,000
- Pharmacogenic Dissection of FDA-approved Anticancer Drugs
  This study will conduct genetic analysis of the ability of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells. It will involve screening all existing FDA-approved cancer drugs and will help discover the genes influencing how cancer drugs work and identify ways of selecting the best medication for each patient, as well as lead to the most effective use of existing drugs.

Wake Forest Research Projects

Ed Levine, Ph.D. & John Stewart, Ph.D. - $39,500
- Randomized Phase 2 Trial Comparing Mitomycin Versus Oxaliplatin for Intraoperative Hyperthermic Profusion in Patients with Disseminated Carcinoma for Cancer of the Appendix
  This study is designed to develop a phase II clinical trial that could lead to treatment for other GI cancers that have metastasized to the peritoneum.

Joseph O'Flaharty, M.D. & Iris Edwards, Ph.D. - $40,000
- PUFA in Breast Cancer II
  These researchers will conduct a supplemental study previously funded by the GAC to study polyunsaturated fatty acids in breast cancer, using approved drugs and perhaps combinations of conventional hormonal and chemotherapeutic regimens.

East Carolina Research Projects

Anne Kellogg, M.D. & Fred Bertrand, Ph.D. - $40,000
- Development of a Novel Monoclonal Antibody Based Therapy for the Treatment of Kidney Cancer
  This research is designed to develop the 8G9 monoclonal antibody into an effective therapeutic agent for the treatment of kidney cancer. This compound could potentially be effective in conjunction with chemotherapy or as a single agent.
