- Steven Akman, MD - Wake Forest - $17,500
- Matched with $17,500 grant from Friends Far an Earlier Breast Cancer Test. Study of metabolics to develop a new blood test for earlier detection of breast cancer.
- David Carrol, PhD - Wake Forest - $25,000
- Use of nanotechnology in medicine to study sending heat probes to specific tissue and activating the probes in mice.
- Peter Clark , MD - Wake Forest - $25,000
- The study of the role of Vitamin D and soy in the prevention of prostate cancer.
- Michael Morse - Duke - $60,000
- Study involving enchancement of the bodies' own defense mechanisms with vaccines to lead to longer survival in colorectal cancer patients.
- Robert Orlowski , MD* - UNC - $75,000
- Study of specific targeting of drugs that effect proteosomes resulting in cancer cell death in patients with myeloma, lymphoma, and leukemia.
- *Robert Orlowski, MD is the recipient of the John O'Hurley Research Grant.
- Ned Sharpless, MD - UNC - $30,000
- Study of specific mechanisms of melanoma cells which lead to proliferation and metastasis, using mouse models.
- Shay Soker, PhD - Wake Forest - $25,000
- A molecular biology study of the effects of endostatin and VEGF in the cell and at the cell junction.
